Bride of Alvar (Redemption Saga, Book 1) Epilogue

The first sight of an ocean in Axus is breathtaking. The south sea is a shimmering blue-violet and the sand shines in the sun white as snow. An emerald, tropical paradise stretches on the other side of the sand seemingly to infinity. v

“I like you especially well on a beach,” I tell Alvar, kissing his cheek with a grin.

Alvar and I walk hand in hand on the shore listening to the gentle waves and seabirds. After all we’ve been through, our tranquility here is surreal to me.

“This world is still perilous, Lucy,” Alvar tells me. “I cannot promise what the future will bring us here. There are still many prejudices to overcome. I can’t change my past, and there are those who would wish me dead after all I’ve done. Entire countries in Axus that are sure to be enraged by the fact that it is general knowledge I’m a Cursed.”

“Let’s not talk of the future, my love, let’s just be here. Right now,” I say, wrapping my arms around his sturdy torso. We stop, gazing out at the horizon of the ocean and I breath in the salty air and smile. “Right now. Is pretty amazing.”

Queen Lucy of Underland

Like Alvar had said, our trip to the ocean was a healing experience and I had plenty of time to be alone with my husband there.

My husband.

I shiver with happiness every time I think about Alvar being my husband.

No longer is our marriage one of duty or cause. It’s one of love.

A love I thought I’d never have for myself.

In a way, we found ourselves on a real honeymoon here at the ocean.

Alvar had us stay in his beautiful ocean-side castle, and it’s like stepping into a true fairy tale. A castle made up of peaked turrets, whimsical staircases, and charming tropical gardens with colorful exotic birds flying overhead. I’m in love with it.

Alvar agrees with me that we shall stay at that ocean abode as often as possible.

Despite my more than shaky introduction to this place, I am comfortable with my decision to stay in Axus. There is more danger here, yes, but after Lord Vessin’s and Grey’s imprisonment it was quite clear that Vessin acted on his own vendetta rather than a group’s. Grey apologized ardently, but Vessin refused to speak. Grey was sentenced to serve time in prison for his betrayal, and exiled from the palace forever. Vessin committed suicide before his sentencing. He left a note saying he’d rather die than serve a Cursed household.

My new personal guard is a huldra male who stands seven feet tall with an immense crown of antlers coming from his skull, broad shoulders, and black and red fur. He’s the strong silent kind of person, but I like him, even though his intimidating appearance makes me jump if he enters the room unexpectedly. Alvar trusts him and has assigned me five more guards to accompany me whenever I go so I feel safer.

Leeza still serves me faithfully and we have become great friends. I trust her decisions with my wardrobe and personal needs completely. She’s taught me a lot about Underland and Axus too (like that wearing bright purple in front of a gobli queen is a sign of disrespect, go figure).

As for my mother, I know we’ll never have the ideal mother/daughter relationship I’ve always wanted, but we’re starting to figure out how to agree to disagree on some of our personal choices and she’s allowed herself to be happy.

Sometimes I miss Earth and miss those I’ve lost and left behind, but life has a way of finding you and sending you to places you never imagined and I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Alvar and I spend each day together, although we have our points of difference or frustrations like any couple, we are in love and our love and bond grows stronger every day. I know I have a lot to learn about Underland and Axus, but I’m determined that I can help make this beautiful and fantastical world a better place for its people.

I don’t know what will happen in the future except that Alvar and I will have two children, which sometimes makes me nervous as I’m not sure when, if ever, I’ll be ready for that, however, what I do know is that already Alvar and I have made a good kind of difference for our people.

As for our own future… Our future is exciting and filled with possibilities, and for the first time ever we both belong.
