“Julie!” Liv complained, “Your silence is killing me! What is with you?”

I ignored her and pretended to look for something in my backpack.

“What happened?” She demanded.

I still didn’t reply.

“Julie?” I shook my head. She sighed and let it go. She parked the car in her usual spot, and we walked into the school.

“Tell me,” Liv said, “I want you to feel better. I hate to see you so … depressed. What happened at the babysitting job?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Did he do anything to you? I swear, if he …”

“No, it’s fine.”

“You don’t look fine.”

I turned to face her. “You’re not going to leave me alone, are you?”

“No. You look too sad.”

“Ok fine,” I kept my eyes on my locker as I put in my combination, “He kissed me.”

“Oh my gosh!” Liv squealed, “You… He… Oh my god!”

“And why do you sound so happy?”

“Why don’t you sound happy?”

“Because he kissed me!” She was totally not getting the point.

“So?” Liv asked. See?

“You know what, just forget it.” I started walking away.

“Hey, hey, hey,” She caught up with me, “Fine, we’ll talk about this later. Just wanted to remind you that I signed you up for this dance lesson.”

I stopped. “Remind? Dance lesson?”

“Whoops,” She said innocently and smiled. “Did I forget to tell you? Anyways, yeah, you’ll be busy every Wednesday from now on.”

“Why, Liv, why?”

“You’ll understand. Remember, I’m doing all this for you,” She handed me what looked like a map. “Have fun!”

I stared after her. I did not understand Liv at all.

I tried to avoid Seb, which wasn’t that easy since he was in all of my classes. I saw him talk to Hollie after second period.

Ethan met up with me again.

“Hey,” He greeted.

“Hey. Ok, since every time you tried to tell me what you want, it backfires, so tell me right now. And get to the point quickly.”

He hesitated for a second. I shot him a look that said “well?”

“I wanted to ask Liv to the Spring Fest,” He mumbled, probably hoping I couldn’t hear it. It took all my will power to not start screaming.

“Then ask her!”

“I don’t know …” He hesitated.

“Go,” I started pushing him, even though I had absolutely no idea where Liv was, “She’ll say yes.”

“How do you know?”

I was about to tell Ethan that she had a crush on him, but then decided against it. He could find out himself.

“Trust me on this one.”

He turned around to face me, “Thanks.”

“No problem,” I watch him walk to Liv, who was far away down the hall, at her locker.

Well, at least someone’s love life is going well.

“I saw you talk to Seb,” I said innocently to Hollie, when we paired up to work on our project again.

“Yeah,” She replied simply.

“And?”

Hollie gave me a funny face. “He’s really nice.”

I knew she knew what I was asking her.

“Never mind,” I shook my head and felt my cheeks flush.

After a few minutes of silence, Hollie said, “Oh yeah, I almost forgot.” She took a folded paper out of her pocket and handed it to me, “From Seb.”

I took it and stared at it.

“What does it say?” I asked her.

“I don’t know,” She shrugged, “I didn’t look at it.”

Did I really want to open it? Hollie gave me another weird look, but didn’t say anything.

I held my breath as I opened it, hoping it wasn’t something too awkward.

Julie,

We have our counselor meeting today at lunch.

Don’t forget.

He didn’t even bother to sign it.

“Oh,” I said.

“You sound disappointed,” Hollie commented.

“I’m not,” I shook my head. I wasn’t disappointed. Of course not.

After fifth period, I made my way to the counselor’s office. Seb was already there, sitting on one of the comfy sofa chairs they had.

“Julie,” Mrs. Harrison greeted. I took the other seat. Seb didn’t even glance at me.

“So, how are you two doing so far?” She asked.

We didn’t say anything, probably thinking the other one would talk. Mrs. Harrison looked at Seb, then at me, then back at him, waiting for someone to answer.

“We’re doing fine,” Seb finally said.

“That’s great!” She replied, probably just happy someone actually said something.

“Did you guys earn any money yet?” The first thing that came into my head was the babysitting job, followed quickly by the kiss. I wish she’d never asked that question.

“Yeah,” Seb replied, like nothing abnormal had happened. I felt a little angry. Then he looked at me for the first time since we’ve arrived.

“The form?” I took it out of my pocket and handed it to Mrs. Harrison.

“Great, great, great,” She repeated as she looked through what I had completed. “How did the babysitting job go?” She looked up at me, expecting me to answer. Seb was silently watching me, waiting for my answer too.

“It was …” Suddenly, the word I wanted to say slipped out of my mind. I glanced frantically around the room. On one of the posters, I saw the word, “atypical”.

“It was, uh, atypical,” I said. What the heck did atypical mean?

I saw Mrs. Harrison raise an eyebrow, “Oh, really?”

She jotted down something in her notes. I glanced at Seb and he stared back at me, expressionless.

We talked for a few more minutes, or rather; Seb and Mrs. Harrison talked for a few more minutes. I just stayed in my seat, staring at the posters. I read the words written on it so many times, I could probably recite all of them.

Finally, Mrs. Harrison said, “Great job. You two are probably the most advanced so far in this project.”

I followed Seb out of the room. The hallways were dead silent. I stared at the floor as we made our way into the cafeteria.

“Julie!” Liv screamed from across the room. I started walking to her and then turned around to see Seb disappear into the crowds of people. I sat down next to Liv and she handed me half her sandwich.

“How’d it go?” Hollie asked.

“It was … boring.” Thankfully, no one pressed for more details.

“Oh my god, did I tell you Ethan asked me to the Spring Fest?” Liv looked so excited.

“She’s been telling that to everyone she sees since fourth period,” Lilly, who was sitting on the other side of her, said.

“I know,” I smiled. “I’m so happy for you.”

“I can’t believe it,” She grinned like an idiot again.

Hollie was looking at someone behind me. I saw her nod.

“Excuse us,” She said as she stood up. She motioned for Liv to follow her. I turned around to see where they were going.

I watched them follow Seb out the door. What were they doing with him?
